Umbrella type
Kids Umbrella
Smaller canopy with safety-led design: rounded rib tips, pinch-free runner and latch, reflective trim and small-part control. Drives EN 71, CPSIA and ASTM F963 compliance for the whole BOM.
Structure
A kids umbrella is a scaled-down frame judged by a different standard: EN 71 and CPSIA, not cycle life. The canopy is smaller, usually 68-85 cm across, and the shaft and ribs are proportioned for a child's hand rather than simply cut short. Everything sharp is designed out - rib tips are radiused and capped, the runner and latch are made pinch-free, and any moulded decoration is tested as a potential small part. Reflective trim is commonly added for the walk to school. Mechanically the frame is simple, usually a manual stick or a short 3-fold, because an auto mechanism adds a button and a latch, which are exactly the features a safety review wants removed.

Assembly flow & quality control points
- 1
Shaft preparation
Supply chain / partnersThe short shaft is cut, punched and finished, then deburred. On a kids frame deburring is a safety step, not a finishing step.
Quality control points
- Burr and sharp edge · Gloved touch check plus 10x loupe · 100%
- 2
Top notch & rib riveting
Supply chain / partnersThe top notch is riveted to the ribs. Rivet tightness is checked so no joint can work loose into a small part.
Quality control points
- Rivet tightness · Visual + probe, no axial play · 100%
- Rib symmetry · Visual on jig, even spacing · First article + AQL per lot
- 3
Hinge assembly and pinch check
Supply chain / partnersStretchers and hinge joints are assembled, then every gap that a small finger can reach is checked for pinch risk while the umbrella is opened and closed.
Quality control points
- Pinch clearance · Finger probe per EN 71-1 accessible-gap method while cycling · 100%
- Joint freedom · Manual swing, no binding · 100%
- 4
Runner and handle assembly
Supply chain / partnersThe runner and the handle are fitted. Both are designed so no cavity can trap a finger when the runner slides.
Quality control points
- Runner travel · Manual slide over full stroke, no binding · 100%
- Handle retention · Static pull test; reference 150 N per GB/T 23147-2018 · 5 pcs per batch
- 5
Canopy cutting, printing & sewing
Supply chain / partnersPanels are cut and printed with the character artwork, then sewn. Printed layers are checked against EN 71-3 migration limits.
Quality control points
- Print migration · EN 71-3 migration report per ink and colour · Per order
- Colour match · D65 light box vs approved swatch · Per dye lot
- 6
Canopy mounting and reflective trim
Supply chain / partnersThe canopy is mounted and tensioned, and the reflective trim is sewn or heat-transferred in place.
Quality control points
- Canopy tension & symmetry · Visual in open position, no sag, no twist · 100%
- Reflective trim position and adhesion · Visual vs approved sample; rub test · Per lot, AQL 2.5 (ISO 2859-1 general level II)
- 7
Tip caps and sharp-point check
Supply chain / partnersRounded tip caps are fitted and every accessible tip is sharp-point tested.
Quality control points
- Sharp point · EN 71-1 sharp-point test on every accessible tip · 100%
- Sharp edge · EN 71-1 sharp-edge test on accessible metal edges · 100%
- Tip cap retention · Pull test to agreed spec, no pull-off · 5 pcs per batch
- 8
Function and water test
Supply chain / partnersThe umbrella is cycled by hand and sampled for leakage. Function defects are AQL 0, and any sharp edge found at this stage stops the lot.
Quality control points
- Open / close cycling · Cycle to buyer spec, no sticking · 100% quick cycle + 5 pcs per batch full cycle
- Shower / water repellency · Spray test per ISO 4920, no drips inside · 5 pcs per batch
- 9
Small-part audit and packing
Supply chain / partnersA final small-part audit is run on the packed product - shake, torque and pull on anything a child could remove - before cartoning.
Quality control points
- Small-part torque and pull · 90 N torque / 70 N pull per EN 71-1 where the part fits the gauge · Per batch
- Packing quantity & marks · Count and carton mark check, age-grade marking present · Per carton
