Umbrella metal part

Parasol Rib

Overview

Made by
Supply chain / partners
Materials
Steel U-channel or flat rib, Aluminium profile rib, Fibreglass (FRP) rib for beach and coastal use
Finish options
Powder coat, Anodised aluminium, Natural FRP with UV-stable gelcoat

Selection tips

  • Steel flat rib is cheap and stiff but rusts; aluminium is light and rust-free but takes a set; FRP handles wind best.
  • Rib length has to match the canopy radius including the curve height, or the canopy sags between ribs.
  • For coastal and beach use specify FRP or aluminium with stainless rivets: rust from a steel rib stains the canopy.
  • Run a deflection check before shipment; it catches thin-wall substitution faster than a visual inspection.

Manufacturing process & quality control points

  1. 1

    Blanking and forming

    Supply chain / partners

Rib stock is blanked and formed. On a parasol the rib span is over a metre, so the section is chosen for stiffness under a loaded canopy rather than for weight.

    Quality control points

    • Length and section · Caliper / profile gauge per drawing · First article + 1 pc per 2 h
  2. 2

Rivet hole punching and end forming

    Supply chain / partners

Hub and stretcher holes are punched, and the outer end is formed to take the canopy pocket or tip.

    Quality control points

    • Hole pitch and burr · Fixture check, no burr at the hole edge · First article + 1 pc per 2 h
  3. 3

    Surface finishing

    Supply chain / partners

Coating or anodising is done by the supply chain. The underside of a parasol rib never dries in the shade, so this is where coating failure starts.

    Quality control points

    • Coating thickness · Thickness gauge per buyer spec · Per batch
    • Corrosion resistance · Neutral salt spray, 5% NaCl, 35 C (ISO 9227 / GB/T 10125) · Per batch
  4. 4

    Stiffness and deflection check

    Supply chain / partners

Ribs are loaded at the tip and deflection is measured. A rib that springs back is fine; one that takes a permanent set will sag in the canopy within a season.

    Quality control points

    • Tip deflection and set · Load to agreed value at the tip, measure residual deflection · Per batch
