Umbrella type
Reverse Folding Umbrella
Canopy folds inward so the wet face is contained when closing. The rib hinge geometry is inverted versus a conventional frame, which changes both the hardware design and the assembly sequence.
Structure
A reverse umbrella closes the other way round: the canopy inverts so the wet outer face ends up inside and the dry face outside, which means you can get into a car without dripping on the seat. Mechanically it is a 3-fold frame with the rib pivot moved to the opposite side of the rib. That single change drives everything: the forming tool for the rib is dedicated, the assembly sequence is inverted, and the fold direction has to be checked on every rib before the frame is built, because the error cannot be corrected afterwards. The payoff is real but the frame carries more joints under more complex loading, so joint consistency is the quality variable.

Assembly flow & quality control points
- 1
Shaft section preparation
Supply chain / partnersThree tube sections are cut, swaged, punched and finished, then deburred and dry-fitted. The shaft itself is conventional; the inversion is all in the ribs.
Quality control points
- Section dimensions · Caliper + tube gauge per drawing · First article + 1 pc per 2 h
- Telescoping smoothness · Manual extend / retract x10 · 100%
- 2
Rib fold-direction check
Supply chain / partnersEvery rib is folded through its full travel against a master rib before it is built in. This is the step that does not exist on a conventional frame, and it is the one that protects the whole selling point of the product.
Quality control points
- Inversion direction · Manual fold-through on each rib against a master rib · 100%
- Pivot side · Fixture check with a left/right-proof jig, no mis-punch · 100%
- 3
Top notch & main rib riveting
Supply chain / partnersThe top notch is riveted to the main ribs, with the rib orientation set by the inverted pivot.
Quality control points
- Rivet tightness · Visual + probe, no axial play · 100%
- Rib symmetry / pitch · Visual on assembly jig, even spacing · First article + AQL per lot
- 4
Rib & stretcher hinge assembly
Supply chain / partnersMiddle and tail rib sections are hinged in the inverted geometry and stretchers are added. Joints must be free of play but tight enough that the rib holds its inverted set.
Quality control points
- Joint freedom · Manual swing at each joint, no binding · 100%
- Inverted set retention · Fold through and release, rib returns to the inverted position · 100%
- 5
Runner, hubs and mechanism on shaft
Supply chain / partnersThe hubs and the opening mechanism are assembled onto the shaft in the correct pre-load order.
Quality control points
- Runner travel · Manual slide over full stroke, no binding · 100%
- Spring orientation & preload · Visual + functional check against work instruction · 100%
- 6
Handle assembly
Supply chain / partnersThe handle is fitted. Reverse umbrellas commonly use a C-handle so the user can keep a hand free when getting into a car.
Quality control points
- Handle retention · Static pull test; reference 150 N per GB/T 23147-2018 · 5 pcs per batch
- 7
Canopy cutting, printing & sewing
Supply chain / partnersPanels are cut, printed and sewn and the seams are waterproofed. The canopy has a dry inner face and a wet outer face by design, so panel orientation is checked.
Quality control points
- Panel orientation · Visual vs approved pre-production sample · Per lot, AQL 2.5 (ISO 2859-1 general level II)
- Seam leakage · Spray / shower test per ISO 4920 or buyer method · 5 pcs per batch
- 8
Canopy mounting on frame
Supply chain / partnersThe canopy is mounted so it inverts cleanly. Mounting it the conventional way round is the second classic reverse-frame error.
Quality control points
- Canopy tension & symmetry · Visual in open position, no sag, no twist · 100%
- Inversion function · Close the umbrella, wet face contained inside · 100%
- 9
Function & water test
Supply chain / partnersThe umbrella is cycled to confirm it inverts every time, then sampled for leakage and wind. Inversion failure is a functional defect and treated as AQL 0.
Quality control points
- Inversion over cycles · Cycle to buyer spec, inverts every time without manual help · 100% quick cycle + 5 pcs per batch full cycle
- Shower / water repellency · Spray test per ISO 4920, no drips inside · 5 pcs per batch
- 10
Appearance inspection, folding & packing
Supply chain / partnersFinal appearance check, then the umbrella is folded in its inverted pattern and packed.
Quality control points
- Appearance & workmanship · Visual: no coating damage, no burr, no stain · Per lot, AQL 2.5 (ISO 2859-1 general level II)
- Packing quantity & marks · Count and carton mark check · Per carton
