Umbrella metal part
Crank Gearbox Housing
Overview
- Made by
- Qinxi in-house
- Materials
- Zinc alloy housing (Zamak 3 / Zamak 5), Steel gear and pinion (supply chain), Steel crank handle (supply chain)
- Finish options
- Powder coat, Plated finish, Textured paint to hide handling marks
Selection tips
- Match the gear ratio to the canopy size: a large canopy on a low ratio is simply too hard to crank.
- Texture paint hides ejector marks and flow lines better than a high-gloss finish, and it does not show handling scratches.
- Water ingress at the output shaft is the main failure: add an O-ring or a labyrinth step.
- Against a manual umbrella: cranking suits large canopies; on a small umbrella it adds cost and one more failure point.
Manufacturing process & quality control points
- 1
Qinxi designs and owns the die for the gearbox housing. The bore positions for the gear, pinion and crank shaft are the whole point of the part: if they are wrong the crank binds, so they are fixed in the tool drawing rather than corrected later.
Quality control points
- Bore positions · Engineering review of the tool plus CMM on first article · Each new tool or project
- 2
The housing is cast in-house. Gearbox housings are functional castings, so dimensional consistency matters more than surface appearance.
Quality control points
- Bore diameter and concentricity · Plug gauge / CMM per drawing · First article + 1 pc per 2 h
- Fill and porosity at bores · Visual under 600-1000 lx, 300 mm · First article + 1 pc per 2 h

Gates and flash are removed and the visible faces are polished in-house. This is part of the die-casting cell, not a separate finishing supplier.
Quality control points
- Residual burr and flash · Gloved touch check plus 10x loupe · Per lot, AQL 2.5 (ISO 2859-1 general level II)

Plating or coating
Supply chain / partnersCoating is applied by the supply chain and checked for thickness and corrosion.
Quality control points
- Coating thickness · Thickness gauge per buyer spec · Per batch

Gear fitting and lift test
Supply chain / partnersGears, the crank shaft and the handle are bought in and assembled into the housing by the assembly line, then the lift is cycled under load.
Quality control points
- Lift function under load · Cycle the crank with the canopy fitted, no slip, no binding · 100%
- Crank effort · Push-pull or torque gauge to agreed limit · 5 pcs per batch
