Selection tips

  • Two-piece poles need 80-100 mm of insertion; a short spigot buckles in wet sand where the pole takes side load.
  • Keep the lower tube wall at 0.9 mm or more. The pole is a cantilever in sand, and thin walls dent at the joint first.
  • For coastal use specify hot-dip galvanising or powder coat plus internal rust protection; a plain zinc layer shows white rust in 48-96 h of salt spray.
  • Aluminium does not rust but bends more and costs more; a badly coated steel pole bleeds rust onto the canopy.

    Tube cutting and coupling forming

    The pole is made in two pieces with a coupling so it breaks down for carrying. The coupling is the part that fails on a beach umbrella, so it is formed rather than bought loose.

    Hole punching and deburring

    Surface finishing

    Coating is applied by the supply chain. Salt air is the design case for every beach hardware part, so corrosion hours are specified higher than for a garden parasol.
