Souvenirs: stamps, plaques & magnets

Zinc Alloy Fridge Magnet / Souvenir Magnet

A die-cast zinc body carrying a landmark, city or brand motif in relief and enamel, with magnets bonded or press-fitted on the back. Typical production sizes run about 50-90 mm across with 2-5 mm thickness and roughly 25-60 g weight, usually fitted with two or three magnets so the piece hangs straight.

Applications

  • Fridge magnetsHousehold use on refrigerators, lockers and magnetic boards; magnet strength must hold on painted steel door panels
  • Tourist attractionsLandmark and city souvenirs sold in scenic-area and airport shops; recognisable silhouette matters more than fine detail
  • CollectiblesSeries and limited editions; consistent plating tone across a series is what collectors notice
  • Museum & gift shopsCollection-themed magnets for museum shops; artwork licensing and colour fidelity drive the specification

Selection tips

  • Design for the size: at 50-90 mm a busy illustration turns to mush. Simplify the silhouette and let relief layers carry the detail.
  • Specify the magnet type and count together with the piece weight - a heavy 3 mm casting needs more than one small magnet or it slides down the door.
  • Magnets that can be swallowed are regulated separately in the US: small, strong, separable magnets fall under the federal magnet rule with a flux-index limit, so avoid loose small magnets on anything marketed to children.
  • Antique and two-tone finishes vary by batch; sign a sample per colour and process the whole series in one run when collectors will compare pieces.
  • Ask for retail-ready packaging that protects the face: plated surfaces scuffing each other in a bulk carton is the most common souvenir complaint.

Manufacturing process & quality control points

  1. 1

    Artwork and relief design

Qinxi in-houseZinc & Aluminum Alloy Die Casting

The motif is redrawn for metal: a silhouette that reads at 50-90 mm, colour areas separated by metal walls, and relief layers instead of fine gradient shading.

    Quality control points

    • Silhouette legibility at production size · 1:1 print and 3D render review · Each new tool or project
  2. 2

    Mould making and die casting

Qinxi in-houseZinc & Aluminum Alloy Die Casting

Mould engraved, parts die cast and de-gated. Thin outline sections are the risk here: they fill last and are the first place to break in handling.

    Quality control points

    • Thin-section fill and porosity · Visual check under 600-1000 lx, 300 mm distance · First 5 pieces per cavity per shift
    • Back recess depth for the magnet · Depth gauge · First article + every 2 hours

    Polishing and plating

    Supply chain / partners

Polished and plated to the target tone. Antique finishes are darkened then relieved on the highlights, so the same batch must be processed together to keep the tone consistent.

    Quality control points

    • Plating tone vs approved sample · D65 light box comparison · One set per plating colour per batch
    • Coating adhesion · Cross-cut and tape test (ISO 2409) · One sample set per batch
  4. 4

    Enamel fill or printed artwork

    Supply chain / partners

Colour is dispensed into the recesses and baked, or the artwork is printed and protected with an epoxy dome. Colour bleed across metal walls and dust in the dome are the usual defects.

    Quality control points

    • Colour match and bleed · D65 light box plus 10x loupe · Per lot, AQL 2.5 (ISO 2859-1 general level II)
  5. 5

    Magnet fitting and pull test

    Supply chain / partners

Magnets are bought-in items, bonded or press-fitted into the back recess and cured. Each design is pull-tested on a painted steel panel, since magnet strength has to overcome the paint film and any door curvature.

    Quality control points

    • Magnet holding force · Pull test on a painted steel panel · One sample set per batch
    • Magnet bond integrity · Shear push-off test on samples · One sample set per batch

    Packing

    Supply chain / partners

Pieces are individually bagged to protect the plating, then boxed with backing cards or gift boxes. Retail-ready packaging is usually part of the souvenir specification.

    Quality control points

    • Appearance at pack-out and set count · Visual check under 600-1000 lx, 300 mm distance · Per lot, AQL 2.5 (ISO 2859-1 general level II)
