Side Release Buckle (Plastic / Metal)

The two-part buckle that separates completely when the side tabs are squeezed, used wherever a strap has to open: chest straps, waist belts, pack lids. Most production buckles are injection-moulded POM because the spring prongs rely on plastic's flex-and-return memory; metal versions exist for tactical and heavy-duty gear but add weight and cost.

Applications

  • BackpacksChest strap and compression strap closure; the buckle width must equal the webbing width
  • Crossbody bagsMain strap opening so the bag can come off the body without re-threading
  • HandbagsUsed mostly on sporty or technical styles where a visible plastic buckle is acceptable
  • BeltsWebbing belt closure and quick-release waist straps

Selection tips

  • Match buckle width to webbing width exactly; a mismatch is the most common cause of twisted, worn straps.
  • Decide plastic or metal by use case, not by looks: plastic gives lighter weight and reliable spring memory, metal adds weight without improving the release mechanism.
  • Ask for cold-impact and UV data on outdoor and children's products - cheap POM becomes brittle after UV exposure and in freezing conditions.
  • Specify the release direction (side or centre) on the drawing; it is invisible in a photo and expensive to discover after tooling.
  • For children's products the buckle is an accessible component and small parts rules apply to any fragment.

Manufacturing process & quality control points

Qinxi in-houseSupply chain / partnersIn-house or supply chain
  1. 1

    Buckle selection and engineering

    Supply chain / partners

The buckle is specified by webbing width, release direction and load: a 25 mm buckle on 20 mm webbing twists and wears at the stitch point, so width to width is the first check.

    Quality control points

    • Width match to webbing · Drawing and sample fit check · Each new tool or project
  2. 2

    Injection moulding

    Supply chain / partners

Housing and insert are injection moulded in POM or nylon. Qinxi does not run this part as an in-house item, so moulding is handled by the supply chain.

    Quality control points

    • Flash, short shot and sink marks · Visual check under 600-1000 lx, 300 mm distance · Per lot, AQL 2.5 (ISO 2859-1 general level II)
    • Prong spring action · Manual release and re-engage cycle · Per lot, AQL 2.5 (ISO 2859-1 general level II)
  3. 3

    Assembly and function test

    Supply chain / partners

Engagement force, release force and repeated cycling are checked; buckles are also checked for release after a low-temperature drop, since plastic prongs lose resilience in the cold.

    Quality control points

    • Engagement and release force · Universal tensile machine, 50 mm/min, record peak and failure mode · Per lot, AQL 2.5 (ISO 2859-1 general level II)
    • Cycle life · Universal tensile machine, 50 mm/min, record peak and failure mode · One sample set per batch
  4. 4

    Incoming inspection and packing

    Supply chain / partners

Incoming lots are inspected for dimensional fit with the production webbing and for colour consistency, then packed in sets so male and female halves are not mixed.

    Quality control points

    • Dimensional fit and colour · Caliper plus light-box colour check · Per lot, AQL 2.5 (ISO 2859-1 general level II)
