Umbrella metal part
5-Fold Rib
Overview
- Made by
- Supply chain / partners
- Materials
- Carbon steel strip (U-channel), Carbon steel wire (hinge pins), Fibreglass (FRP) for the tail rib
- Finish options
- Zinc / nickel plating, Black epoxy coating, Colour-matched powder coat
Selection tips
- The shortest five-fold segment is only a few centimetres long, so hole pitch has to hold about +/-0.1 mm. The piercing tool, not the press, decides yield.
- Too deep a U-channel interferes when folded, too shallow loses stiffness; thin strip (0.25-0.3 mm) needs stress relieving after forming.
- Use FRP for the tail rib: an all-steel five-fold rib takes a permanent set after one strong gust.
- E-coat survives the bend better than plating. Coating cracks at the hinge bends are the classic five-fold failure.
Manufacturing process & quality control points
- 1
Blanking and straightening
Supply chain / partnersStrip is blanked to rib length and straightened. A rib that starts bowed gives a canopy that sags between ribs no matter how well it is tensioned.
Quality control points
- Length and straightness · Caliper + flat plate check · First article + 1 pc per 2 h
- 2
U-channel roll forming / pressing
Supply chain / partnersThe U-channel section is roll formed or pressed. Channel depth sets rib stiffness: too shallow and the rib buckles under wind load, too deep and the rib will not nest when folded.
Quality control points
- Channel depth and width · Caliper / profile gauge per drawing · First article + 1 pc per 2 h

Rivet hole punching and end forming
Supply chain / partnersHinge holes are punched and the rib ends are formed to take the stretcher and the tip cap. Hole pitch is what sets how symmetric the canopy sits.
Quality control points
- Hole pitch and burr · Fixture check; no burr at the hole edge · First article + 1 pc per 2 h

Stress relieving (as required)
Supply chain / partnersFormed ribs are stress relieved where the bend radius is tight, so the rib keeps its set instead of springing back over the first weeks of use.
Quality control points

Surface finishing
Supply chain / partnersRibs are plated or coated by the supply chain. Corrosion on a folding rib starts at the punched holes, because that is where the coating is thinnest.
Quality control points
- Coating thickness · Thickness gauge per buyer spec · Per batch
- Corrosion resistance · Neutral salt spray, 5% NaCl, 35 C (ISO 9227 / GB/T 10125) · Per batch

Tail rib (FRP) forming
Supply chain / partnersOn a 5-fold frame the rib folds three times; the shortest section is only a few centimetres long, which makes hole pitch the tightest tolerance on the frame. The fibreglass tail is formed and bonded to the steel section; the joint between steel and FRP is the weak point of every folding rib.
Quality control points
- Steel-to-FRP joint pull · Pull test to agreed spec, no separation · 5 pcs per batch
