Selection tips

  • Bubble canopies are short and sharply curved, so U-channel depth and spring-back decide the shape. A full-length FRP rib avoids permanent kinks.
  • A clear canopy shows every rib, so the finish must be even: plating colour variation is far more visible than powder coat variation here.
  • Rivet holes go where the canopy curvature puts them; drill 0.1 mm over the pin or the joints bind after assembly.
  • Against a straight rib: a bubble canopy inverts in wind, so use FRP or a deeper U-channel rather than saving on section.

Manufacturing process & quality control points

  1. 1

    Blanking and deep forming

    Supply chain / partners

Rib stock is blanked and formed into a deeper section than a standard rib. A bubble canopy is domed rather than flared, so the rib carries a longer arc and needs a stiffer section.

    Quality control points

    • Arc geometry and section · Profile gauge against the canopy template · First article + 1 pc per 2 h
  2. 2

Rivet hole punching and end forming

    Supply chain / partners

Hinge holes are punched and the ends are formed to take the canopy seam and the tip.

    Quality control points

    • Hole pitch and burr · Fixture check, no burr at the hole edge · First article + 1 pc per 2 h
  3. 3

    Surface finishing

    Supply chain / partners

Plating or coating is applied by the supply chain. On a transparent umbrella the ribs are fully visible, so a plating blemish that would never be seen on an opaque canopy is a reject here.

    Quality control points

    • Plating appearance · Visual under D65 light, 300 mm, no stain or water mark · Per lot, AQL 2.5 (ISO 2859-1 general level II)
  4. 4

    Spring-back check

    Supply chain / partners

Ribs are checked for spring-back. A bubble canopy is stretched over the frame, so a rib that loses its arc shows immediately as a flat spot in the dome.

    Quality control points

    • Arc retention · Compare against the canopy template after 24 h · Per batch
